Handmade in Croatia
For our shoes, we work together with an Austrian company, which has been manufacturing working, employment and traditional shoes for generations. As a result of this orientation, the company is strongly anchored in regional material networks and has decades of experience in the production of sturdy footwear.
The seat is in Austria, the production is for the most part outsourced to the area around Varazdin, in the north of Croatia.
Until a few years ago, a large part of the Central European shoe industry was active in this area. As the big manufacturers migrated farther to the east, smaller quality producers settled in order to benefit from and further expand their many years of accumulated know-how for high-quality shoes.
Organic and Comfortable
Our soles are cast by hand in the southeast of France. They consist of the natural milk of the rubber tree (Hevea) which is harvested in plantations in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam with sustainable methods.
Reltex has developed a process for producing a unique and high strength microstructure. The rubber milk is poured into steel molds, where it coagulates in about 40 minutes. The molded soles are then water-quenched in a cold bath and left in it for one day. They are then placed in a hot air dryer for 24 hours before returning to cold water for washing. Finally, the soles of the shoes are dried for about a week.
This elaborate, completely manual process is unique in the world, takes around 8 days per pair of soles and guarantees gentle hardening. During the process, the water, that is contained in the milk, evaporates and creates a capillary structure consisting of tiny air bubbles. This makes Lactae Hevea soles unparalleled in their comfort and also very resistant to abrasion.
For us, they are simply the best soles in the world.

Sustainable produced leather
The upper leather for our Derby is a waterproofed, mineral-tanned cowhide to Terracare standards. It is robust, easy to clean and offers a very good breathability despite high water resistance.
The majority of commercially available leather is produced in the Far East. This means not only cheaper labor costs, but, above all, hardly any regulations in the use of chemicals and dyes, as well as low protection during processing. Very often, pre-tanned raw materials from the Far East are later refined in Europe and thus get its "Made in" seal. Quite generally speaking, the German leather industry is called the cleanest in the world due to its strict regulations.
We purchase our upper leather from one of the last full-scale tanneries in Central Europe, the Heinen leather factory in Wegberg, Germany. Heinen has been producing at this site since 1891 and is a pioneer in sustainable leather production. Heinen was the first tannery in the world to receive the ECOL certificate for energy-efficient leather production and has been awarded the highest gold award in the Leather Working Group. The raw hides come from Germany or the immediate vicinity and can be traced without gaps.
Heinen guarantees us high-quality, technically sophisticated leather, which is produced environmentally friendly under high social standards.
